Keep your Furnace performing at its best with our expert Survey solutions

What is the Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS)?

A Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) is a specialized evaluation of temperature uniformity in heating systems, furnaces, and, most importantly, heat treatment equipment.

Its purpose is to verify and validate thermal uniformity throughout the heating chamber, ensuring that consistent temperature distribution is directly reflected in the quality of the final product.
These tests must be performed using certified instruments with current calibration certificates, while considering the required number of thermocouples or measurement points in accordance with the applicable standards, such as CQI-9.

Not taking surveys is a problem because you're at risk of:

  • Since it can result in you being unable to offer a minimum level of homogeneity in your heating processes
  • Not achieving the quality of material that your client requires
  • Operating below optimal levels
  • Not having the kind of furnace performance history that could help you optimize your operation
  • Being unable to diagnose combustion and control problems present in the equipment.

When Should You Perform a TUS?

Recommended frequency

Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) are generally recommended on a quarterly or semiannual basis, depending on the process requirements and the standards applicable to your operation.

After maintenance

Whenever preventive or corrective maintenance is performed on a furnace, it is highly recommended to conduct a TUS immediately afterward to verify that the equipment continues to meet the temperature uniformity requirements and product specifications.

Why is it important to conduct temperature uniformity surveys in an industrial furnace?

Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) are critical in industry because they are used to ensure that your thermal process is reliable, repeatable, and safe. They also help demonstrate compliance with applicable process standards, such as CQI-9.

Thermal uniformity: ensures that all products within the heat treatment process receive the same thermal exposure, preventing variations in hardness, mechanical properties, and microstructure.
Standards: such as CQI-9 and AMS 2750 require periodic temperature uniformity testing to ensure process traceability and compliance with customer requirements in industries such as automotive and aerospace.
Energy efficiency: These surveys can also help identify heat losses or areas of excessive fuel consumption, providing valuable information for optimizing combustion control, improving thermal efficiency, and reducing operating costs.

6 Steps for conducting a Temperature Uniformity Survey in an Industrial Furnace

To perform a Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) on an industrial furnace, a technical procedure is followed to verify that the work zone maintains uniform temperature conditions throughout the entire chamber. The following steps are typically recommended:

1

Planning the Survey

Define the scope of the study, work zones, and acceptance criteria.
Determine the number of thermocouples and their locations according to applicable standards, such as CQI-9
Establish the allowable temperature tolerances.
2

Furnace Preparation

Ensure the furnace is operating under safe and representative conditions before testing begins.
Verifying burner calibration, inspecting the insulation system, and performing the survey under unloaded conditions, if required by the applicable specification.
3

Thermocouple Installation

Install thermocouples at representative locations throughout the work zone. Sensors are typically distributed at corners, the center, and other critical areas of the chamber.
Calibrated thermocouples, cables, and connectors should be used, and proper mounting must be ensured to avoid inaccurate readings.
4

Data Collection

Record and monitor temperature data throughout the survey cycle, ensuring all measurement points are continuously tracked during the test.
5

Results Analysis

Compare all recorded temperatures against the established acceptance criteria and allowable tolerances.
Calculate the maximum temperature variation between thermocouples and identify any hot or cold zones within the furnace.
6

Documentation and Corrective Actions

Generate a detailed survey report documenting the results, conclusions, and any required corrective actions if the furnace does not meet the specified temperature uniformity requirements.
