Flue gas analysis in an industrial furnace is a technical measurement used to evaluate combustion quality, energy efficiency, and environmental compliance by measuring gases such as O₂, CO, CO₂, and NOx.

Depending on your location, there are regulations aimed at controlling pollutant emissions. These standards help ensure operational safety and environmental compliance.

In Mexico, the equivalent standard is NOM-085-SEMARNAT-2011, which regulates emissions from furnaces and boilers.
In the United States, in addition to NFPA and EPA requirements, some states have stricter local regulations, such as California and Texas.

Typically, flue gas analysis consists of measuring the gases generated by the air-fuel mixture within your system. This analysis is performed using portable analyzers or fixed systems that collect samples from the stack or exhaust ducts.

Why is it important to perform a gas analysis on your furnace?

What are the steps for performing a gas analysis on your furnace?

To perform flue gas analysis in your industrial furnace, a technical procedure is followed to ensure reliable and useful measurements for adjusting operation, complying with regulations, and ensuring safety.

1. Equipment Preparation

Before starting, the analyzer is prepared and the sampling point is defined.

  • Verify gas analyzer calibration
  • Check that filters and probes are clean
  • Verify temperature and pressure conditions to prevent damage
  • Select the sampling point in the stack or duct

2. Probe Installation

This step is very important, since incorrect installation may result in inaccurate measurements.

  • Place the probe in the exhaust gas duct.
  • Use safety gloves and goggles
  • Insert the probe at a representative point in the flow
  • Avoid external air leaks

3. Parameter Measurement

The analyzer records the main gases and operating conditions.

  • Measure O₂, CO, CO₂, and NOx
  • Record stack temperature and pressure
  • Verify reading stability

4. Results Interpretation

The values obtained are compared against regulatory and efficiency limits.

  • Identify excess air, indicated by high O₂
  • Detect incomplete combustion, indicated by high CO
  • Evaluate efficiency through CO₂
  • Review NOx levels against environmental limits

5. Corrective Actions

Based on the results, furnace operation is adjusted.

  • Regulate the air-fuel mixture
  • Adjust burners and valves
  • Schedule maintenance if deviations are detected
  • Document results in the compliance log

How do you interpret the data?

Interpreting flue gas analysis in your furnace means translating measured values into indicators of efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance.

It is not enough to obtain numbers; it is necessary to understand what they reflect about burner operation and the combustion system.

Oxygen (O₂)

  • High → excess air, heat loss, and increased NOx formation.
  • Low → risk of incomplete combustion and CO generation.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

  • High → incomplete combustion, risk of poisoning, and environmental penalties.
  • Ideal → close to zero, indicating a proper air-fuel mixture.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

  • High → good fuel combustion efficiency.
  • Low → excess air or poorly calibrated burners.

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

  • High → excessively hot flame or excess air.
  • Controlled → stable combustion and lower environmental impact.

In summary, interpreting furnace flue gas analysis tells you whether your fuel consumption is too high or whether your furnace is generating hazardous pollutants.
